Toilet Paper Roll Tea Cup Craft


Today we are making paper tea cups! These tea cups are made from toilet paper tubes and extra cardboard boxes you may have laying around. Kids of all ages will love making their very own paper tea cups and a tea pot! This tea cup craft is something that younger kids and older kids will both have fun making and playing with. Make this tea cup craft at home or in the classroom.

Tea Cup Craft For Kids

This tea cup craft is budget-friendly, easy to do, and also promotes pretend play. It’s a win-win really. However, younger kids will need assistance with this craft as it does use a hot glue gun. Though tacky glue and a glue stick could probably be used.

Kids will also be able to practice their fine motor skills as they draw, paint, cut the tea set pieces together. You can decorate this DIY tea set anyway you want. This tea cup craft is the perfect way to use up cardboard and toilet paper rolls. Who knew paper tea cups could be so cute?

Supplies Needed To Make This Tea Cup Craft

How To Make This Super Adorable Tea Cup Craft

Step 1

Paper Tea Cups- Step 1 - 2 toilet paper rolls cut in half- Kids Activities Blog
Cut two of your toilet paper rolls in half.

To start the process of making your paper tea cups, you will need to cut 2 of the toilet paper rolls in half. You should have 4 cups now.

Step 2

Trace your toilet paper roll on a piece of cardboard and draw a circle around it.

Cut off a section of your cardboard and draw around one of your tea cups. Now draw another circle about 1/2 inch around the original circle.

Cut out the circle. You need 4 total.

That will be your tea cup saucer. You need 4 of these.

Step 3

Lay your toilet paper tube on the cardboard and mark 2 areas for the length of your handle. Now draw a smaller U and a bigger U. Add some length to the legs as you will be using them as tabs.

On the extra cardboard, lay your tea cup down. Mark 2 lines on the cardboard. The length is up to you, this is how long your tea cup handle will be. We used a c-shape for out handles to make it easier to glue later. Cut them out. You will need 4 handles.

Craft Notes:

Make these handles a little longer than you need. I added about 1/4 inch to them. You’ll be folding little tabs over later.

Step 4

Now that you have all your cardboard pieces, we can make the tea cups.

Using your hot glue gun, glue the bottom of your tea cup to the middle of the saucer.

Step 5

Use the hot glue gun to glue the toilet paper roll to the circle and then fold 2 tabs on the handle and use those to glue the handle to the cup.

Fold about 1/4-1/2 inch tabs on your handles. Use the tabs to glue the handle to the cup.

Do this for all the cups.

Do this for all your cups.

Making Your Own Toilet Paper Roll Tea Pot

Step 6

Follow steps 2 and 3 for the tea pot. Also cut out a tab for the lid and a shape for the spout. Glue the pieces onto the tea pot.

Now, leave your 3rd toilet paper roll long. You will follow step 2 and 3 from above. Cut them out.

Step 7

You will also need a round tab cut out. We used the finger hole tab from the drink box.

Step 8

Cut off a piece of a cardboard to make a spout. You can see the shape of ours.

Step 9

Glue the tab to the circle. And glue the circle to the top of your toilet paper roll. That’s your tea pot lid.

Step 10

Now it’s time to decorate your tea set.

Fold about 1/4-1/2 inch tabs on your handles. Use the tabs to glue the handle to the tea pot. Now do the same for the spout.

Step 11

Paint your paper tea cups and tea pot. We also added googly eyes and smiley faces. You can add any decorations to your DIY tea set.

Paint them and decorate them any way you want!

Making This Tea Cup Craft Your Own

Just like all our other toilet paper roll crafts you can make this craft your own. You can do things like:

  • Add glitter
  • Use brown paper or plastic to make it look like there is tea in the cups.
  • Paint flowers or other pictures of your tea set.
  • Use stickers to decorate your tea set.
  • Make the tea cups larger.
  • Paint the saucers different colors than the tea cups.
  • Use decorated paper to make different of matching tea cups and saucers.
  • Add more details to your matching saucer.
  • Upcycle paper towel rolls to make different sized teacups and tea pot.
  • Make a cardboard tray and use it as a centerpiece on your play table.
  • Paint little birds on your tea set.
  • Fill your tea cups up with birdseed and put them on your porch.
  • Don’t glue the lid to your teapot so you can lift it on and off.
  • Paper crafts can be super unique, you could decoupage images onto your tea set.
  • Use a scrap of fabric to make a table cloth for your tea set.
  • Paint it to fit any holiday season.
  • Teacup crafts can benefits from extras like making cardboard plates, forks, and spoons for your guests to fully enjoy a tea party.
  • Don’t use saucers, but make a smaller base of your teacup.
  • Put LED candles into your tea cups to make your own teacup candles which doubles as home decor or outdoor decor.

We had so much fun making this tea cup craft and then playing with it afterwards.

Our Experience With This Tea Cup Craft

We had so much fun making this paper tea cup craft. We had a abundance of toilet paper rolls. Turns out we saved quite a few of them over time. And the crate was getting full so I had to get creative. And what’s more creative than making a craft that you can play with!

It was fun to make tea cups and a tea pot and to see how the kids decorated their own cups. Then we had a pretend tea party! It was a blast. We put our pinkies out and pretended to be fancy! And we had cookies. You can’t have a tea party without snacks.

It was a lovely way to spend the afternoon with my kids and they loved it. It’s important to spend time with your kids and to allow them to use their imagination. I hope your family has as much fun making these paper tea cups as we did!
