California resident Prince Harry returned to England to pay his respects on August 28, at the funeral of his uncle Lord Robert Fellowes, and it was likely a sentimental pilgrimage for the Montecito-based royal. According to People, the Duke of Sussex stayed at Lady Diâs childhood home and final resting place, Althorp House, during the visit. The 13,000-acre Northamptonshire estate, currently owned by Dianaâs younger brother, Charles Spencer, has been in the Spencer family for over 500 years.
AD toured the Grade I listed country home in 1991, following extensive renovations by Dianaâs father, Lord John Spencer. Diana was 14 when her family moved into the homeâwhich hosts over 90 rooms, including a 115-foot-long picture gallery lined in Tudor-style oak paneling and a double-height Georgian-style entrance hall where the Peopleâs Princess practiced tap dancing. Diana was buried on a small island in the middle of Round Oval Lake on the grounds of Althorp, surrounded by 36 oak treesâone for each year of the young princessâs life.
Per Vanity Fair, Harry recounted a 2022 visit to the burial site with his wife, Meghan Markle, in his 2023 memoir Spare. âGliding across the pond, I gazed around at Althorpâs rolling fields and ancient trees, the thousands of green acres where my mother grew up, and where, though things werenât perfect, sheâd known some peace,â he wrote.
